Big Walk Field Guide

Unofficial · sources shown

An unofficial companion to Big Walk, with every source shown.

Before you buy

No single player. No couch co-op.

Both of these get asked constantly and both answers are a flat no, so it is worth knowing before money changes hands.

Single player

No

Not a limited version. None at all. Minimum two players.

Couch co-op / split-screen

No

Online only, and not from one room.

What the developers say

The official FAQ does not hedge on this. Asked whether there is a single-player mode, House House answer:

“No, sorry. Big Walk is entirely about teamwork and talking.” Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

This is not a feature that was cut or one that might arrive later. The whole game is built on two or more people talking to each other through positional voice chat, with challenges that deliberately restrict or reshape how you can communicate. Remove the second person and there is nothing left to build on. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab) Wikipedia (secondary source, opens in a new tab)

And there is no matchmaking either

This is the part that catches people out. Even accepting that you need a group, you cannot find one inside the game. There is no public matchmaking and no server browser. Big Walk expects the same group of people across multiple sessions. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

Practically: if you do not already have at least one friend who will buy it or claim it too, buying this game on your own leaves you with something you cannot start. Line the group up first.

Why couch co-op does not work

There is no split-screen mode, so the technical answer is simply that it does not exist. Worth noting the official FAQ never raises the subject; that half comes from GamesRadar+. GamesRadar+ (secondary source, opens in a new tab)

What the developers do address is the room itself, and their reason is more interesting than a missing feature. Asked whether you can play with friends in the same house, the FAQ answers “Maybe!” and then explains:

“It won't work if you're all in the same room, since you'll hear each other outside of voice chat.” Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

Hearing each other through the air rather than through the game defeats positional voice chat, which is the entire mechanic. Separate rooms in the same house are fine.

What you do get

  • Two to twelve players online, on a session the host sizes in advance.
  • Crossplay, so PC, Mac, PS5 and Switch 2 friends can play in the same group.
  • Automatic saving, held by whoever hosts.
  • A designed ending, meant to be reached start-to-finish with the same people.

Common questions

Does Big Walk have a single-player mode?

No. The official FAQ answers this directly: "No, sorry. Big Walk is entirely about teamwork and talking." There is no solo mode, no bot companions, and no reduced version for one person.

Can you play Big Walk solo?

No. The minimum party size is two players, and there is no matchmaking to pair you with strangers, so you need to bring at least one other person yourself.

Does Big Walk have couch co-op or split-screen?

No. Big Walk is online-only, with no local or split-screen mode. Separately, the developers warn that playing with everyone in the same physical room does not work, because you hear each other outside of voice chat and that defeats the positional chat the game is built on.

Can two people in the same house play Big Walk?

Yes, on separate machines in separate rooms. The official FAQ says this works. What does not work is everyone sitting in one room, where microphones pick up each other and the proximity chat design collapses.

Got your group together? Next thing to sort out is what player count the host should choose. The answer is less obvious than it looks.
